Russell L. Hooper

Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Russell L. Hooper is a native of Palestine, Texas. He was commissioned in 1985 through the Army ROTC Program at Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas as a Distinguished Military Graduate. As an Artillery Officer, he completed the Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in June 1986 and reported to his first duty assignment in Germany. He was assigned to the 3-79 th  Field Artillery Battalion (Lance), 42 nd  Field Artillery Brigade. During this tour, he served as platoon leader and executive officer at the battery level.

Hooper returned to Fort Sill in 1989 to attend the Officer Advanced Course. Upon completion, he immediately assumed command of Alpha Battery, 1-17 th  Field Artillery Battalion, 75 th  Field Artillery Brigade. He deployed his unit to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Upon re-deployment, he served as Assistant Plans and Operations Officer for III Corps Artillery at Fort Sill.

In late 1992, LTC Hooper was assigned as a FORSCOM resident trainer for the Louisiana National Guard’s 256 th  Mechanized Brigade. Hooper was assigned as the Executive Officer of the 1-141 st Field Artillery Battalion (155mm, SP, PALADIN) from 1996 through 1998. He served as the Battalion Commander of this unit from October 1998 through October 2001. After a brief tour as the Assistant G-3, Operations, he was assigned to the Joint Forces Command Headquarters-Louisiana. His last assignment was the Maintenance and Logistics Officer at Camp Minden, Louisiana. Hooper retired in March 2006 after 20 years of active military service.

LTC Hooper served for two years as the Senior Army Instructor (JROTC) at Emmett J. Conrad High School, Dallas ISD in Dallas, Texas. He is currently the JROTC Coordinator for the DeSoto Independent School District and the Senior Army Instructor at the DeSoto High School. His military awards include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (w/3 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (w/3 OLC), the National Defense Service Medal and the Liberation of Kuwait Medal.
